My Favorite Adventures – Denmark II

Last week, I posted the first part of a photographic tour of the Danish leg of our June 2011 European trip.  If you haven’t seen that entry, you won’t be lost continuing from this point but if you are interested you can see it here.

Nordre Toldbod waterfront

Less than a 10 minute walk from our accommodations at the Admiral Hotel, and before reaching the Kastellet, is the waterfront pier area of Nordre Toldbod.  Currently the site is home to the headquarters of Mærsk and the Danish Energy Agency.

Also of interest are the Royal Pavillions, where the royal family awaits the launch to shuttle them out to Her Danish Majesty’s Yacht Dannebrog (HDMY Dannebrog), which is the official residence of the royal family while serving on overseas business or holiday.  The yacht was named by Queen Alexandrine in 1931 after the flag of Denmark, Dannebrog, meaning “flag of the Danes” or “the red flag”, according to the Official Website of Denmark.

Rosenborg Castle

Currently home to the Danish Crown Jewels and Royal Danish Collection, Rosenborg Castle was originally built as a summer palace for Christian IV in the 1600s.  The castle has housed the collections since 1710, and was opened to the public 1838.  The Royal Life Guards are garrisoned in the barracks next to the castle.

Louisiana Museum of Modern Art

Outside of Copenhagen, in Humlebæk, is an art museum on the shore of the  Øresund Sound.  The museum was named after the estate on which is was built, which was named after the original founder’s three wives, each named Louise.  Knud Jensen took over the estate and opened the museum in 1958.  His original intention was for the museum to exhibit Danish modern art, but, after a few years, Louisiana became an international museum.  The original villa still stands on the property, with new construction incorporated into the surroundings.

Fredensborg Palace

Frederick IV had Fredensborg Castle, also known as Frederiksborg Castle, built as a hunting seat in Northern Zealand the 1700s.   Currently, the castle is used as the site for important events in the lives of the royal family, and by Her Majesty The Queen as a seasonal residence.   Crown Prince Frederik and Princess Mary reside in  The Chancellery House (marked “A” on aeriel map).  The chapel (marked “B” on aeriel map), built in 1726, holds public services every Sunday for the members of the Asminderød-Grønholt parishes.

That brings us to the end of today’s photo tour.  Next time we’ll visit Nyhavn, take a boat tour, see the view from the top of the Rundetarn, and parade with some elephants!
